so..my scanner really hates scanning watercolors...because the scan did no justice to this, and that makes me sad T-T

oh well...I can try scanning it on my brother's scanner later and see if there is a difference. Anyway, I'm enjoying painting like this in my sketchbook, it gives off a nice, blended quality which works well for clothing designs.

I really dig this piece. What I get from it is that it's kind of a caricatured person, in that she seems exaggeratedly skinny. And she also seems very stylish, a la Rocky Horror Picture Show, based on the hair. The apple could be a reference to the Bible (Eve) or Snow White and the poison apple, I guess.

Her legs do seem a bit too long, physically impossibly so, but that could be a style you're going for. I think you did very good and shading and the use of light. Maybe it could use a tad more shadowing on her face, as in the shadow from her hair and the contours of her face, but again, that could be a stylistic decision. Other than that, it seems pretty flawless to me.

I love her hair! It kind of reminds me of pom-poms. The outfit is absolutely fabulous. I mean, this could seriously be submitted to a fashion designer or something. It's very original. You did an incredible job on the folds in her skirt and her top. You also succeeding in drawing lace, which has never been a strong-suit of mine. And I DIG her platforms and legwarmers. She's absolutely fabulous!

If you don't mind my asking, I'd like to know if she is a character that has a story behind her or if there was someone who you based her upon or an inspiration. I'd also like to know if her style, and those of the people you draw, reflect your own style of dress. I'd also like to know if the apple is an allusion to something else or just a random piece of fruit.

Keep in mind with all of this, I have no technical training as an artist, outside of high school and half of a college drawing class. So my critiques are that of a novice. And I can't draw nearly as a good as you - I wouldn't even try.

thanks for the long comment, I love getting them and seeing what people interpert from my art.

First, inspirations. There were many, the main one being the artist Ai Yazawa, she is the creator of the japanese comics (manga) Paradise Kiss and Nana, and is known for her really tall, overly thin characters, and her amazing ability to draw clothing. She's one of my favourite artists and I get lots of inspiration from her. As for her hair, I just though the floofy hair would match the outfit, the hair color and style is also partly inspired by Jasmine, a character from a cartoon called The Boodocks. When I drew the apple, I vaguely thought of Snow White..I was contemplating making it a strawberry, but strawberrys are smaller and I wanted something that would fit her entire hand.

When I drew her, I didn't have a story in mind, truthfully, I just needed to get the outfit drawn out, but I try to make my models look interesting even when the main focus is the clothes. As for the styles of my characters, I do dress similar, (I've been told before that I look like my characters) though my characters are more edgy and extreme in terms of clothing, tattoos, piercings etc...they also dress more revealing than I, lol. I'm always inspired and intruiged by alternative ways of dress, and the music scene is a constant inspiration for my characters. The apple has no story behind it, though I like your interpertation of Eve, and the poison apple..it crossed my mind too, but for the most part, its just a prop :D

Thanks again for your in depth comment, critiques and compliments, I really appreciate it, and am glad you enjoy it

That's very cool! I know The Boondocks and the Jasmine character you speak of. I see that now. I really want to check out Yazawa's work now. From your description, it sounds like you could give her a run for her money!

I think you've succeeded in what you were trying to do. You must have the best style! I'd never have the balls to dress like that...or the money, though I'd like to. I, too, draw from the alternative/music style sometimes. I really like how people in the scene dress.

You're very welcome!
